5 Ideas for white allies in Colorado to Support Black Leaders

Being a white ally is an essential part of promoting racial justice and equality. As a member of a dominant racial group, white allies have a responsibility to actively work toward dismantling the structures of racism and promoting equity and inclusivity. This can include speaking out against racism, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, and taking tangible steps to address racial inequalities in your personal and professional life.

Here are five ideas for white allies in Colorado to support Black leaders:

  1. Listen and learn: Take the time to listen to Black leaders and understand their perspectives. Educate yourself on the issues they face and the work they're doing.

  2. Amplify their voices: Use your privilege to amplify the voices of Black leaders. Share their work and messages on your own social media and with your networks.

  3. Provide resources: Offer your time, expertise, and resources to support Black leaders and their work. This could include volunteering, donating, or offering professional services.

  4. Create space: Use your privilege to create space for Black leaders to speak and be heard. This could mean advocating for their inclusion in events or creating opportunities for them to share their work.

  5. Hold others accountable: Call out racism and discrimination when you see it, and hold others accountable for their actions. Use your privilege to advocate for and protect Black leaders in your community.

Sign the Petition to Reinstate Dr. Medlock

On Monday, April 17, 2023, Colorado Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) Commissioner, Morgan Medlock, MD, MDiv, MPH, a Black community leader, was unjustly removed from her Colorado cabinet position without cause. Her removal risks the lives of millions of people in Colorado who deserve accessible, trauma-informed, and culturally-responsive behavioral health care. It also perpetuates the message that strong, qualified Women of Color are vulnerable to the whims of political systems and cabinet leadership.

Demand justice for Dr. Medlock by signing the petition for Governor Polis to bring her back as the Commissioner of the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration (BHA).
